Fluency lesson

Central Focus: The focus of this lesson is for students to read the text and to answer questions based on the text. After every question students must rate their confidence level. This will tell me how students feel they are doing academically  when reading and answering the questions.  I will be able to target students needs and students will be able to see their own true understandings.
Knowledge of students to inform teaching: Students should know good reader skills. Students should high light important information as well as number paragraphs. These skills should make referring back to the text easier for the students.
Common Core State Standards: NY- New York State Core Curriculum (updated)
Subject: English Language Arts (May 2005)
Grade Range: Grades 2–4
Strand: Reading
Core Performance Indicator: Use decoding strategies, such as sounding out words, comparing similar words, breaking words into smaller words, and looking for word parts, such as root words, prefixes, and suffixes
Core Performance Indicator: Use self-monitoring strategies, such as rereading and cross-checking
Core Performance Indicator: Read with attention to sentence structure and punctuation, such as periods, question marks, and commas, to assist in comprehension
Core Performance Indicator: Engage in independent silent reading
Core Performance Indicator: Read with increasing fluency and confidence from a variety of texts

Support literacy development through language (academic language): Students should- refer back to the text, read context clues, Infer and predict.
Learning objectives:
Students will: Practice their good reader skills, Rate their learning and comprehension and fluency confidence, see how they can improve and target their mistakes.

Assessment: Informal assessment will be students rating their own confidence level when answering questions. Students will be able to see if they are comprehending the information properly.

Instructional procedure:
Introduce the lesson to the students.
Remind students of good reader skills. (highlight important information, number paragraphs, write down ideas)
Give students time to read and answer questions
Go over questions with students, have students use colored pencils to correct their answer if needed.
Reflect on the correlation of answered based on confidence levels.
See where students need more help.
