When working with the student I was able to observe interesting things. Students are able to identify words based on symbols or pictures.Students also practice letter sounds. Students practice this activity daily and perform the drill sounds daily as well. The student was also able to identify words on their own. Having the isolated word made it easier for the student to focus. When putting words in text, it made it more difficult for the student to focus the words one at a time. The text to seem overwhelming. The student would also perform well during the sound drill, but when it came to reading the text the student had a hard time making out the proper letter sounds. After modeling paragraph reading the student was able to slow down the reading and mind the letter sounds and words better.
3 websites to help my student with the elements of literacy:
Scholastic news (even has audio read along features!)
Raz- Kids (guided reading and interactive books)
ABC mouse (early learners: sight words, phonics and interactive books)
Hi Karla
ReplyDeleteI agree ABC mouse is a great resource. What age was the student? Perhaps implementing a mini phonics lesson would help as well
