QRI 5 V DIBLES

The QRI5 and DIBLES are an assessment tool used by educators to benchmark and keep track of a students reading skills. Both forms of assessments involve the student  reading passages where the educator is able to look on a copy of the text and mark the student according to their reading. The QRI5 assessment is a longer process than the DIBLES. During the QRI5 the student will first read words according to grade level. Student will read works on a list, depending on the number of words correct on the page the student will either move on to a more difficult list or move to a lower level list of words. This is meant to test the studies vocabulary ability. If a student is reading at a certain level the text and word list will reflect that. Once the student is finished reading the passage (which is not timed), the student is asked to retell and recall certain details from the text.  Retelling and recalling facts is important as it is counted toward the comprehension ability of the student. The DIBLES is a timed assessment. The student has 1 minute to read a text. It does not matter if they finish the text or not. Students have to read with fluency, mind their vocabulary as well as recall facts. This exam is done 3 times a year. The student can score : Intensive, strategic or core, with core being fluent. DIBELS is given to primary grade students a number of quick tests, educators will have the data to identify students who need additional assistance and to monitor the effectiveness of intervention strategies. While both assessments are used to monitor students grades, both have their differences. It is important to choose the best assessment for your class and students.
